Commandery

Major General Thomas West Sherman no. 1, Rhode Island Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War was founded on June 20, 2017, with a Charter signed by Commander-in-Chief Donald L. Martin. Beginning as a small yet sturdy Camp, the Brothers who have been elected to the office of Camp Commander have dedicated their efforts to fostering the bonds of Fraternity, growing the Camp Membership, partnering with the local community and honoring the Union Soldiers who rest on Aquidneck Island and beyond.

The Camp Commander's Badge of the late, storied Commodore Joel Abbott Camp no. 21, Newport, was gifted to Major General Thomas West Sherman Camp 1 upon the occasion of receiving its Charter, and is worn proudly and then passed on to each new Camp Commander.
